Imagine chugging down a beer and dashing off for a 400-meter sprint, only to repeat the process three more times, totaling a mile. The Beer Mile isn't just a race; it's a thrilling blend of chugging, burping, running, and balancing all at once. As participants strive to keep the beer down and their spirits up, the Beer Mile showcases the ultimate test of coordination and athleticism.
Linden Randburg, a vibrant community known for its enthusiasm for sports, witnessed a remarkable display of courage and camaraderie at the Beer Mile event hosted by the local running club, Linden Runner. Athletes from the neighborhood gathered at the high school grounds, eager to take on the challenge.
We were placed in the A batch, and were given half an hour to complete the daunting task. To our amazement, we completed the Beer Mile in an impressive 17 minutes. The cheers, the laughter, and the shared accomplishment highlighted the true spirit of the event.
The Beer Mile isn't just a local event – it's a global phenomenon. The current world record holder, Corey Bellemore from Canada, set the bar high with a stunning time of 4 minutes and 28 seconds. Despite a hiccup in 2023 when he lost his shoe during the race, Corey's determination remained evident as he finished in 4 minutes and 30 seconds - we look forward to his 2024 event.
On the women's side, Shelby Houlihan claimed the spotlight with her remarkable record of 5 minutes and 43 seconds in the 2023 Beer Mile World Classic. Her achievement showcases the growing inclusivity and competitive spirit within the sport.
